Kidney Cancer

The most common types of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma (RCC). RCC accounts for 85% of all cases. In RCC, cancerous (malignant) cells develop in the lining of the kidney's tubules and grow into a tumor.

When a single tumor develops, although more than one tumor can develop within one or both kidneys. Early diagnosis is important, because most early treatments are effective. Tumors that have grown large or metastasized into the blood stream usually end up fatal.

In the US, kidney cancer only makes up about 3% of all cancers. 32,000 new cases are reported each year, and about 12,000 of the patients die each year. It occurs most often in people between the ages of 50-70 and about twice as often in men as women.
